In recent years wigs have become increasingly realistic thanks to world-renowned wig technology that creates wigs that look just like normal hair. Both human hair and synthetic wigs offer an array of benefits, however depending on your personal circumstances and preferences, you might prefer one over the other.

Don’t be fooled by the fact synthetic wigs aren’t made out of human hair; their high-quality fibre strands showcase total naturalness and can often be mistaken for real biological hair. Natural looking synthetic wigs offer popular qualities that might appeal to you: they require less maintenance, they’re cost-effective, they hold their style for longer periods of time and conveniently they don’t frizz, regardless of bad weather conditions.

In this article, Tia goes much deeper, giving you more information, more advice, and supplying you with all the information you will need to purchase your first wig…or your next!

Step #1: Choosing Your Wig There are so many wigs available, how do you ever narrow down the choices to the best ones for you?! Let’s break down the first set of questions you need to ask yourself, plus the deets you need to make some choices. I’ve outlined several questions you will need to ask yourself when purchasing a wig in the last article. Let’s build on that here and help you gain more understanding to make an informed purchasing decision. WIG FIBER/MATERIAL “What is the price range you are willing to spend on a wig?” and “Do you want synthetic fibers, human hair, or do you have no preference?” In most cases, price is tied to the type of fibers you want and the type and amount of finishes you desire. For the sake of clarity, let’s lay out some terms and define them in the way that I will be discussing them here:

Human Hair – Human hair wigs are made of “natural hair”. That hair can be of Indian, Chinese or European origin. Some wigs even include animal hair like yak. Human Hair Blends - Human hair (30%) and synthetic (70%) mixed in most cases. This hybrid can offer the convenience of synthetic and a more “natural” look that you can get from human hair wigs. Synthetic – A variety of manufactured fibers of various textures – also referred to fake or faux hair. Name brand wigs – Some name brand wigs are referred to as medical wigs as they are made for those who are wearing wigs for medical reasons. Name Brand Wigs come “ready to wear” with high end finishes. Affordable wigs – Wigs that you can find in a Beauty Supply Store and online, customizable, and often come in a wide variety of textures.

Human hair wigs are going to be priced higher than wigs with synthetic fibers. Name Brand or “medical wigs”, are going to be more expensive than affordable or beauty supply store wigs. Why a price difference? Human hair is more expensive because it’s “real” hair and obviously cannot be mass produced like synthetic fibers can. Moreover, if you want a human hair wig that is the same texture and color as your bio hair – depending on your ethnicity and the color - it can drastically impact the price. Name brand/medical wigs come as close to “ready-to-wear” as possible. They can have high-end finishes and comforts including bendable ear tabs, monofilament caps, and hand-tied lace fronts, to name a few.

Affordable wigs have come a long way in the last few years. They can come with many of the same high-end finishes as name brands. Still, there are many great additions and differences that set the price. One huge difference is the market and demographic that is available for affordable wigs versus name brand. This topic can be complex, and I have a video specifically discussing it. For our purposes today, the biggest difference is the ability and sometimes necessity for customization. Affordable wigs may need to be plucked, the part could require setting in a particular way, and lace fronts may need to be cut to your head shape and preferences, etc.

MAINTENANCE/CARE “How much time do you have to spend on a wig?” Some wigs require more time and effort than others. Depending on your preferences, available time, and skill, the price of the wig you choose, may be influenced. For example, because human hair wigs are made of natural hair, they behave like bio hair. A benefit is that they can be styled, straightened, and curled, just like bio hair can. Still, they can have disadvantages for some people. They are susceptible to water, heat, humidity, sun, etc. - just like bio hair would be. This could require more time and effort and at times more skill than you currently possess. If you do not have a lot of experience or time to style your wig, you may want to consider synthetic. I primarily deal with synthetic wigs for 3 reasons. Human hair can require you to glue your wig down. As a migraine sufferer, I need to be able to remove my wig quickly and as needed, so glue is not ideal.

Here’s an assignment to help you get mentally prepared: Spend some time looking at photos of real women wearing wigs and also of women who have natural hair that you love. Why? I have found that one of the biggest fears women have about wearing wigs is that they are afraid that they will look fake or “wiggy”. By spending time looking at wigs and natural hair, you will be able to understand the little tweaks that you can make to a wig to make it look more natural. I also recently did a video where I explored the hairlines and parts of wigs vs. bio hair. I wanted to see for myself if wigs were as detectable as we believe they are in our heads. What I found may surprise you as it really surprised me!

This leads me into my second tip: research! I really believe that being informed is one of the best tools that you have available. Wigs can look very realistic and like with anything else, the more you know the more you grow. That could not apply more to wearing wigs.

Whenever I make a video, I do extensive research and add what I have learned to my personal experience. Whatever questions or concerns you have about wigs – look them up. Watch YouTube videos, read blogs like this one, and visit Facebook groups dedicated to wigs. You will learn so much! That being said, keep in mind that wearing wigs is very personal and we all have different preferences. Take and incorporate what you learn that applies to you and add it to your growing knowledge.

Now that you have done some research and understand the ways that wigs can look more like natural bio hair, let’s talk lace! Not all wigs have lace fronts, but if you plan to purchase a lace front or already own one, I’ve got a few tricks to make your hairline look more realistic. Some lace front wigs come with pre-cut, ready to wear lace and others come with lace that will need to be trimmed down.

If you plan to utilize your own hair to blend the wig, then feel free to cut the lace back right up to the wig’s hairline if you desire. However, if you are not using your bio hair to blend the wig, cut the lace based on how your natural hairline is, or would be. Remember - our hairlines are not perfect and are unique to our heads – so your wig’s hairline should follow suit. I have found that embracing the natural imperfections that parts and hairlines have really contribute to wigs looking more realistic.

Speaking of your natural hairline, here’s a bonus tip. One thing I have been doing lately, which has helped my wigs look more convincing, is to keep my widow’s peak, sideburns, and the patches of hair around my hairline that extend past my wig’s hairline intact. Though I shave down the sides and back of my bio hair, I leave enough in these areas that help create a “natural” illusion around the hairline.

Okay, now that we have explored the hairline, let’s move on to the rooting and part area of the wig.Have you ever noticed that wigs with some rooting (a darker color at the root of the wig that mimics bio hair) look more natural? If you’re looking to create the illusion of bio hair, choose a rooted style or create roots using a variety of products.

I have many videos on the technique of creating roots, but one of the most important elements is to be sure to root the wig along the parting space as well as along the hairline. Believe it or not, you most likely already have the products that you need to create rooting! Products that can be used to achieve roots include brow powders and matte eyeshadows of the color desired. Colored dry shampoos and root sprays are quite effective as well. These sprays allow you to blend in your bio hair along the hairline for a seamless look – especially if your hair is not quite the color of the roots. Keep in mind these products are not waterproof and can come off on your hands or be washed out. If you require a more waterproof option, then alcohol-activated face & body paint (makeup) would be best.

Now that the rooting looks more natural, let’s work on the part. Using powder in the part that matches your skin tone can help it look more like your scalp. To add further seamlessness, I place powder all along the hairline - where the lace and knots meet your skin.In the parting area, I use the same color powder as my skin tone or just slightly lighter, as our scalp can often be. Along the hairline, I use powder that is the same color as my skin tone and add a bit of bronzer where it would naturally fall on my forehead and temples near the wig.

We are getting closer now! There are several things you can “do” to the wig to ensure it looks more undetectable. Other than creating rooting, adding “baby hairs” and sideburns can serve more than one purpose. They can mimic numerous natural hairlines but don’t forget your research…not all hairlines look the same. Moreover, baby hairs and sideburns can be gelled or “laid” down, which can add a bit of security without having to glue down the entire wig.

The most important tip is to avoid making the wig look too perfect. If you want your wig to look natural, remember that hair is free moving, can have a mind of its own, and is not usually keen to stay put - unless styled that way. As I say, “gruff it up a bit”! Lol! When I say gruff it up a bit, I mean shake out the wig and break up the part – separating it from any permatease that may be present.Play around with the fibers of the part until it looks … “right” to you.

Finger-pick and fluff up the wig with your hands. Sometimes playing around with combing and moving around the fibers of a wig can really do wonders! As I said before, your head and hairline are unique to you, don’t expect your wig to come already prepared for it. A synthetic wig may look like human hair, but it is in fact fibers. From the wig’s assembly to packaging and shipping, those fibers can arrive to you flattened and tight to one another. The warmth of your hands and some gruffing can make your wig come alive.

Finally, feel free to style and accessorize! Treat your wig as you would your bio hair or the dream hair you have always wanted!! Experiment: clip it up, add a headband, put it in a pony…. have fun with it! My motto is: Life is short wear wigs!!

Care Tips to Avoid Damaging Your Curly Wig Do not shake or agitate curly wigs when you take them out of the box. If the curl or wave starts a little lower from the hairline, brush the top and part the hair, but only finger style the ends. Place the hairnet on the wig when washing to avoid weighing down and separating the curls. Use a leave-in conditioner and reshape the curls using your fingers. Shopping for a wig can be a confusing and frustrating endeavor, especially if it’s your first time. Faced with so many new hair and wig-related terms, some wig seekers simply don’t know where to start. The Wig Company aims to demystify the world of wigs so that you can shop with knowledge and confidence. Whether you’re a wig veteran looking to try something new or you’re deciding if wearing a wig is the right choice for you, read on and learn everything you need to know about real human hair wigs.

Human vs Synthetic vs Natural Hair When we use the term real human hair it seems pretty straightforward, right? You take hair from a human head and make a wig out of it—simple. Well, not quite. There are actually several different treatments of human hair that change how it looks and feels, how long it lasts, and its optimal care. Let’s start with the basics. Human hair wigs are completely distinct from synthetic wigs, whose fibers are produced by humans but not found in nature. Real or natural may be used to refer to human hair but know that not all real or natural hair is human; many real hair wigs are sourced from animals such as the yak, which has a hair structure remarkably similar to human hair. In short, when shopping for 100% human hair wigs or real hair toppers check that your wig is clearly described as human hair. Remy Hair In order to understand what it means for hair to qualify as Remy hair, we need to understand a little more about the structure of hair itself.

three-layers-of-human-hair.jpg A strand of human hair consists of three layers: The inner Medulla – the nearly invisible innermost layer of the hair shaft, soft and fragile, and has little to do with how hair behaves. A middle layer called the Cortex – this contains all the keratin and proteins that give your hair strength, and is also the place where chemical reactions from dyes and perms take place An outer Cuticle layer – this is made up of lots of little layers of translucent cells that overlap like scales or shingles on a roof. Remy human hair wigs and toppers pay special attention to the cuticle layer, making sure that all of the scales are facing the same direction. This is important because the cuticle layer protects the inner Cortex from the elements. When all cuticles are facing the same direction, brushing and styling pushes them tight to the Cortex. Closing the cuticle not only protects the hair, it also allows light to cleanly reflect off the strand, giving it a glossy, healthy shine. A Remy human hair wig or wiglet is a hairpiece with all the cuticles arranged facing downward. The hair is typically taken directly from the donor’s head and tied together so that it will remain in this natural state. Because of the attention to this detail, Remy wigs are long-lasting with fantastic shine and a natural look and feel.
